What are veneers?
Veneers are thin coverings that can be bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to alter their appearance. At Campsie Street Dental, we use porcelain veneers that look similar to teeth enamel and reflect light in the same way for a natural appearance. Our dentists can match your veneers to your natural tooth colour or a shade of your choice if you’d prefer a brighter look.
To prepare your teeth for porcelain veneers, a small amount of their surface needs to be reduced and roughened to make it easier for the veneers to bond. This could make your teeth feel more sensitive for a time after the treatment. We’ll then take moulds of your teeth that will be used to make your new veneers.
We’ll then check the fit and make any adjustments needed before bonding your new smile into place.
What are Lumineers®?
Lumineers® are a specific brand of veneers that may require less preparation of the tooth before they can be fitted. This is often an option for those who would prefer not to alter the structure of their natural teeth.
To achieve this, Lumineers® are much thinner than standard veneers, comparable to contact lenses for your teeth. However, because they’re fitted directly over your teeth, they may appear and feel bulkier.
Lumineers® are manufactured in an external laboratory. After we’ve taken moulds of your teeth, we’ll fit you with temporary veneers to wear until your next appointment. When your Lumineers® are ready, we’ll check that they fit properly and that you’re happy with their appearance before we bond them onto your teeth.
How long do veneers last?
When you take good care of your veneers or Lumineers®, they can usually last 10-20 years. You can help to extend their lifespan by avoiding overly hard food and activities that could cause damage and following good oral hygiene to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Veneers or orthodontic treatment?
Veneers can be an option for teeth that are only slightly crooked or have small gaps. If you want to straighten teeth that are more severely crooked or misaligned, we may recommend orthodontic treatment using braces or Invisalign®.
